What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support aims to improve people’s Quality of Life by completing a Function Behaviour Assessment which helps you and others understand the reasons for your behaviour.
A Behaviour Support Plan is developed from the Function Behaviour Assessment, and it should describe any behaviours or concern and include strategies to help you cope, or teach others how to support you.
Only Clinicians registered with the NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission can provide Positive Behaviour Support and there are four practitioner levels.
(1) Core practitioner – an entry level practitioner who should be supervised by a higher level practitioner.
(2) Proficient practitioner – a practitioner who can analyse and evaluate information including appraising the quality of individual plans.
(3) Advanced practitioner – has skills across all capability domains and should be able to make effective decisions in complex situations. They can provide supervision to core and proficient practitioners.
(4) Specialist practitioner – a practitioner with demonstrated specialisation in a related field.
Not all Behaviour Practitioners have the same educational backgrounds or clinical experience required to support complex individuals. Ensure you ask about their relevant clinical skills before you engage one.
